BOISE, ID – An Idaho Maximum Security Institution staff member remains hospitalized after being assaulted by an inmate Saturday, according to prison officials.
The incident occurred Jan. 17, 2026, when a 56-year-old corporal at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution was assaulted by inmate Robert David Pompa. The staff member was transported to Saint Alphonsus Medical Center, where they remain hospitalized in stable condition.
Following the assault, IMSI staff secured the crime scene with assistance from officers at the Idaho State Correctional Institution and the Idaho State Correctional Center. Prison officials said the facility returned to normal operations earlier today.
Pompa is currently serving multiple sentences at IMSI. His convictions include second-degree murder in Madison County, for which he is serving a life sentence, as well as multiple felony convictions from Bannock, Power, and Madison counties. Those convictions include aggravated battery, burglary, eluding a police officer, unlawful discharge of a weapon, grand theft, and battery on a correctional officer. Records show Pompa’s parole eligibility date is Nov. 17, 2046.
The Idaho State Police are investigating the assault.
