PULLMAN, WA — Washington State University will offer the first public tasting of its newest apple variety, Sunflare™, during a preview sampling event on campus Thursday, Jan. 22.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the CUB Food Court and is open to WSU students, faculty, and staff while supplies last. Sunflare™ is a tart, crunchy, and juicy apple developed through WSU’s tree fruit research program and is the first new apple released by the university since Cosmic Crisp® .
The apple is a cross between Honeycrisp and Cripps Pink, also known as Pink Lady®, and was first bred in 1998. Sunflare™ is expected to reach grocery stores in 2029, with royalties supporting ongoing research and future apple varieties at WSU .
