COEUR D’ALENE, ID— Demolition crews working at a property in the 1000 block of East Lakeside Avenue discovered a safe containing roughly six pounds of electronic blasting caps Tuesday afternoon, according to the Coeur d’Alene Police Department.
Police said the safe was found in the basement of a residence around 12:15 p.m. A project manager opened it and located the blasting caps, which were then transported to the police department for disposal.
Because the condition of the devices was unknown, officers secured the blasting caps in the department’s lobby and evacuated nearby areas as a precaution. Local businesses were notified, and the street in front of the police department was temporarily closed. Ramsey Elementary was also placed on a safety hold.
The Spokane Bomb Squad responded to Coeur d’Alene and safely took custody of the blasting caps for proper disposal, police said.
Authorities noted that explosive materials are occasionally discovered after being stored and forgotten over time. Police advise anyone who encounters a suspicious item believed to be explosive to leave it in place and contact law enforcement so officers can take appropriate safety measures.
