PULLMAN, WA — The Pullman Police Department says it does not enforce federal immigration law or assist with immigration enforcement, responding to community concerns related to recent actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
In a statement, the department said its officers are certified peace officers under Washington law and do not collect or share immigration information. Police said they operate in compliance with state law, including the Keep Washington Working Act, which limits local involvement in federal immigration enforcement.
The department said it reviews the lawful authority of any law enforcement activity occurring within the City of Pullman, regardless of the agency involved. Police also said they are not aware of any current immigration enforcement activity in or around Pullman.
While noting it does not have authority to obstruct federal agencies, the department warned that interfering with any law enforcement activity is illegal and could pose safety risks. Officials encouraged residents with concerns about laws or policies to pursue lawful options such as free speech, legislative action, or the courts.
The department said its mission remains focused on public safety, quality of life, and protecting the rights of all community members, including Washington State University students.
