Concealed hypodermic needle found at Lenore Rest Area, officials urge caution

LENORE, ID — The Idaho Transportation Department is warning travelers and staff to use caution at rest areas after a concealed hypodermic needle was discovered inside a restroom stall at the Lenore Rest Area.

According to the department, the needle was found on Friday, Jan. 23, hidden beneath a handrail inside a restroom stall. Because it was concealed, officials say it posed a serious risk of accidental needle-stick injury and potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

The Idaho State Police remains involved as discarded needles and other drug paraphernalia are increasingly being found across the state, including at rest areas and along highway rights of way.

ITD said rest area caretakers have been notified and are paying closer attention to concealed areas. The department is also asking the public to remain aware of their surroundings when using rest areas and to be mindful of where their hands are placed, particularly around handrails and trash receptacles.

Officials advise that if a needle or suspected drug paraphernalia is found, it should not be touched unless proper safety equipment is available. Sharps containers are kept in rest area supply closets, and ISP should be contacted if someone is not comfortable handling the item.

ITD said it will continue mitigation efforts through increased awareness and vigilance, and is exploring additional bloodborne pathogen safety training to support employee safety at rest areas statewide.

The incident occurred at the Lenore Rest Area along U.S. Highway 12.
