Idaho County Sheriff’s Office Honors Deputies, Residents for Life-Saving Actions

GRANGEVILLE, ID – The Idaho County Sheriff’s Office recognized four individuals for acts of bravery and selfless service during a special awards ceremony held at a recent Idaho County Commissioners meeting.

Sheriff Doug Ulmer presented the commendations, expressing appreciation for both deputies and community members who stepped forward in critical moments.

“Idaho County is blessed beyond measure,” Ulmer said. “Not only do we have the most dedicated and honorable deputies working for our county; we also have extraordinary residents.”

Those honored included:

Deputy Jabari James was recognized for his actions during widespread flooding on April 14, 2024. According to the Sheriff’s Office, James entered swift-moving floodwaters to rescue a motorist trapped in a vehicle as conditions rapidly worsened.

Zachary Wilkins and Benjamin Wilkins were honored for rescuing a young man from the Clearwater River on January 28, 2026. The pair were steelhead fishing near Kamiah when they witnessed a kayaker capsize in icy water. The Sheriff’s Office said their quick response and coordinated efforts were instrumental in saving the man’s life.

Senior Deputy Scott Sumpter received recognition for his response to a house fire in Riggins on February 1, 2026. Authorities said Sumpter forced entry into the burning home and carried an unconscious woman to safety.

In addition to the Sheriff’s Office commendations, each recipient also received letters of recognition from state and county leaders, including members of the Idaho House of Representatives, the Idaho State Senate, and the Idaho County Board of Commissioners.

Ulmer said the awards reflect appreciation from leaders across the state and county and recognized individuals who acted without hesitation when others were in need.

The Sheriff’s Office extended its thanks to first responders and community members who continue to serve Idaho County.
