MOSCOW, ID — A second-floor apartment fire at 709 S. Adams Street was quickly contained Tuesday evening, with no injuries reported.
According to a press release from the City of Moscow Fire Department, crews were dispatched at approximately 5:34 p.m. on February 17. The first engine arrived on scene in under three minutes.
Initial reports indicated the apartment was filled with smoke. Firefighters reported no visible smoke from the exterior upon arrival, but encountered moderate smoke conditions inside the unit, along with limited flames in the kitchen area. Crews extinguished the fire and completed salvage, overhaul and ventilation operations to remove remaining smoke.
No one was home at the time of the incident. Smoke alarms inside the apartment activated and alerted a returning resident.
Investigators determined the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials placed in a trash can. Damage was limited to the kitchen and was described as light.
Whitcom 911 assisted at the scene. The American Red Cross provided assistance to the occupants.
