LEWISTON, ID – Lewis-Clark State College is gathering input on whether the school should adopt a physical mascot.
The college emphasized that its athletic teams will remain the Warriors. The question under consideration is whether LC State should add a physical mascot to represent the institution.
The initiative began during the 2024-25 academic year when the Associated Students of Lewis-Clark State College expressed interest in adopting a mascot. In fall 2025, the college formed a 19-member task force made up of students, faculty, staff and alumni to research and review the idea.
According to the college, the task force’s research has included school history, conference mascots, area mascots, brand identity and marketing, and wildlife native to Idaho. Hundreds of ideas have been considered.
On Jan. 15, 2026, the college launched a feedback form to gather campus input. A total of 288 individuals responded, including 140 students. Among respondents, 85% indicated approval of at least one of the options being researched by the task force.
Two options received the most support. Wolverine was preferred by 37% of respondents, while bighorn sheep was selected by 26%. Fifteen percent chose “other,” 13% selected kestrel and 10% chose mammoth.
To continue collecting feedback, the college has launched a new poll that will remain open through Feb. 25. Based on the earlier feedback, the poll includes four options: Wolverine, Bighorn Sheep, Other and No Mascot.
