No. 21 LC State Baseball Opens CCC Play with Split at No. 10 UBC

VANCOUVER, B.C. – No. 21 LC State Baseball split Friday’s doubleheader with No. 10 British Columbia with a 5-2 win and 9-1 loss. The Warriors opened the day with their seventh straight victory before suffering the first loss of the season.

The split has the record at 7-1 overall and 1-1 in Cascade Conference play.

GAME ONE: No. 21 LC State def. No. 10 UBC 5-2

Spencer Zeller led off the contest with a walk before Izzy Madariaga put the Warriors on the board in a hurry with a two-run blast in the top of the first inning. The LC State defense turned a pair of double plays behind starter Evan Canfield to limit UBC to one run through the first three innings to maintain a 2-1 edge.

The Warriors extended their lead in the top of the fourth. Brandon Nguyen singled through the right side to start the offense in the frame and Cade Westerlund launched the second two-run home run of the game for a 4-1 advantage.

Bulla Ephan singled to lead off the top of the fifth and Bo Stinson took over on the bases and promptly stole second. A base hit by Madariaga put a runner in scoring position. Sam Weber grounded into a fielder’s choice to push the lead to 5-1. Canfield fanned two in the bottom of the inning to keep the Thunderbirds off the board.

LC State went to the bullpen in the seventh inning and Jace Taylor struck out a pair before giving up a run. Jordan Lennartson took over on the mound and tossed the final two innings to earn his first save.

STAT RECAP

Madariaga led the Warriors with two hits in the contest. Westerlund and Madariaga each drove in two runs.

Canfield earned the win on the mound after striking out seven in six innings. Lennartson was awarded the save after two shutout innings of relief.

GAME TWO: No. 10 UBC def. No. 21 LC State 9-1

UBC took advantage of three LC State errors in the first inning for a quick 2-0 lead. The Warriors answered with a run on hits by Anthony Karagiannopoulos and Sam Weber to cut the difference to 2-1.

Landon Webb worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the third, but more defensive miscues plagued LC State as the deficit grew to 5-1.

UBC added on to pull ahead 9-1 and split the day.

STAT RECAP

Weber recorded two hits in the game with one RBI. Joseph Perez worked three innings of relief with three strikeouts. Webb suffered the loss on the mound and gave up six runs with only one earned in five innings. LC State pitching did not walk a batter.
