LEWISTON, ID — Lewis-Clark State College will host its 39th annual Native American Awareness Week, March 10-20, under the theme “Reflections of Culture & Environment.”
Organizers say the theme examines how tribal culture connects with and is influenced by environmental forces. All events are free and open to the public.
The week opens March 10 with a Mini-Powwow for area fourth graders from 10-11:15 a.m. at the P1FCU Activity Center.
Events resume March 17 on the second floor of the Library, beginning with a 10:30 a.m. presentation by Nez Perce Tribal member Roberta “Robbie” Tawlikitsanmay’ Paul. A “Nimiipuu 101” workshop follows at noon, and a session on the Nez Perce Tribe Environmental Restoration & Waste Management Program is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., including information about Hanford Nuclear Site cleanup efforts.
On March 18, LC State Nez Perce language students will offer short lessons outside Reid Centennial Hall from 3-4:15 p.m., followed by storytelling from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Silverthorne Theatre.
A Friendship Dinner, including student acknowledgements and a Lifetime Achievement Award presentation, is set for March 19 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Library.
The week concludes March 20 with the Simíinekem Wewéexòp Páaxòam powwow and scholarship raffle from 7-11:30 p.m. at Lapwai High School.
The event is presented by the LC State Native American Club.
