One Killed in Four-Vehicle Crash on U.S. Highway 12

LEWISTON, ID — A 71-year-old Orofino man died following a four-vehicle crash Friday night on U.S. Highway 12, according to Idaho State Police.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:08 p.m. Feb. 27 at milepost 15.3. Idaho State Police reported that a 2005 Toyota Tacoma, driven by a juvenile male from Lewiston, was traveling eastbound when it began passing a 2005 Ford F-150 driven by the Orofino man. Both vehicles were eastbound at the time, according to investigators.

As the Tacoma attempted to pass, it entered the westbound lane while a 2015 semi tractor-trailer driven by a 59-year-old Texas man was traveling westbound. The Tacoma then reentered the eastbound lane and struck the Ford. The Ford lost control, crossed into the westbound lane and collided with a westbound 2018 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 47-year-old Kellogg man.

The Orofino man died from injuries sustained in the crash while emergency responders were on scene, according to Idaho State Police.

The driver of the Chevrolet was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. A 48-year-old female passenger in the Chevrolet was not injured. The juvenile driver of the Toyota was uninjured, and the semi was not damaged.

Idaho State Police were assisted at the scene by the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office, Nez Perce Tribal Police, Lewiston Ambulance and the Nez Perce County Coroner’s Office. The crash remains under investigation.
