BOISE, ID – The Idaho State Police announced the retirement of explosive detection K-9 Kimber after the dog was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. Kimber, who has served at the Idaho State Capitol since 2022, underwent surgery in February to remove a cyst, with testing confirming the cancer. Veterinarians have given her only weeks to live.
“Kimber is only five years old,” said K-9 handler Trooper Jayce Miller. “You never expect to be saying goodbye this soon. The minute she went to work, she was completely locked in. She loved doing her job and meeting people. For now, I’m just focused on giving her all the extra treats and love she deserves.”
Since joining the Capitol Protective Services team, Kimber has assisted with security operations during legislative sessions, public events, protests, and at state facilities across the Boise area.
Miller said he is closely monitoring Kimber’s condition and will make decisions in her best interest as she enters retirement.
