MOSCOW, ID — University of Idaho faculty members will discuss the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States during a public panel discussion scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the Idaho Student Union Building Clearwater-Whitewater Room on the Moscow campus. The event is free and will also be livestreamed online.
The panel is co-sponsored by the university’s Martin Institute and Department of Politics and Philosophy and will include faculty members from those units as well as the School of Global Studies. Organizers say the discussion will examine the conflict in Iran, U.S. policy considerations, reactions from European allies and perspectives from countries across the Middle East.
Bill Smith, director of the Martin Institute, said the discussion is intended to provide additional context beyond daily news coverage.
The latest escalation began Feb. 28, when the United States and Israel targeted Iranian leaders and military facilities, including nuclear and ballistic missile sites. Iran has since responded, with the conflict expanding to additional countries in the region.
The United States and Iran have not had formal diplomatic relations since 1979, and tensions have persisted despite the 2015 nuclear agreement, which sought to limit Iran’s nuclear development before the U.S. withdrew from the deal in 2018.
