Idaho to eliminate license plate registration stickers under new law

BOISE, ID — Idaho drivers will no longer need to display registration stickers on their license plates beginning July 1, 2026, under a new state law approved this year.

House Bill 533 eliminates the long-standing requirement that motorists place annual registration stickers on their vehicle plates. Instead, drivers will only need a valid license plate and current vehicle registration to meet state traffic laws.

The Idaho Transportation Department said the change is expected to save the state about $300,000 each year by eliminating the production and materials required for the stickers.

Despite the change, vehicle registration requirements will remain in place. Drivers must still renew their registrations on schedule, and vehicles found without current registration can still be cited by law enforcement, which carries a $101 fine.

Current license plates will remain valid and do not need to be modified once the law takes effect. Law enforcement officers will continue verifying vehicle registration during traffic stops and other routine checks.

State officials say the July 1 implementation date gives agencies and residents time to transition to the updated system.
