Lewiston monitoring drainage after rainfall causes standing water

Courtesy - City of LewistonLEWISTON, ID — City officials say recent rainfall has created standing water in some areas around Lewiston as stormwater systems work to handle the increased runoff.

According to the City of Lewiston, more than 0.34 inches of rain fell within a 24-hour period. While the amount may seem small, officials said prolonged rainfall can strain stormwater systems and lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas or locations where drainage infrastructure is limited.

Residents may notice water pooling in streets, parks and other areas while storm drains temporarily struggle to keep up with the volume of water. The city’s Public Works Department has been monitoring drainage systems and addressing areas that require attention.

City crews recently responded to an overflowing pond along Alder Avenue. Public Works staff drained the pond to help prevent flooding that could have affected nearby properties.

Officials say projects funded through Lewiston’s Stormwater Utility are intended to improve drainage infrastructure and reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rain events. Additional improvement projects are planned to help manage stormwater more effectively in the future.

At this time, the city reports it is not aware of any widespread damage related to the rainfall.

City staff will continue monitoring rainfall totals, water levels and drainage systems over the coming days. Residents who notice significant flooding, blocked storm drains or possible illicit discharges are asked to contact the Lewiston Public Works Department at 208-746-1316.
