Heavy rains are causing severe flooding in the Moscow-Pullman area.
Paradise Creek in Moscow set a new record flood level Saturday morning of over 11.5 feet. That broke the old record by a few inches that was set in 2019. Paradise Creek appears to be receding.
The South Fork of the Palouse River in Pullman is flooding several areas including downtown and the city playfields. The high water has flooded Lily Bee’s boutique downtown. For the second straight year the Pine Street Plaza pedestrian bridge has been floated off its abutments. This time the bridge did pivot as designed to the side of the river. Last year’s February flood lodged the bridge just off the abutments. It took the city until late summer to get the span back in place. The bridge was installed nearly 20 years ago and didn’t float until last year. The South Fork reached nearly 9 feet Saturday morning which is the highest level since January of 1997 and the 6th most in recorded history. It appears that the South Fork has crested as of late Saturday morning. The National Weather Service didn’t predict flooding for Pullman until Friday evening.
The Palouse River through Potlatch and the City of Palouse has reached moderate flood stage and is expected to crest mid-day today around 16 feet. That predicted crest will be lower than last year’s flood in February.
Nearly two inches of rain fell Friday at the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport which shattered the old record for March 13th by an inch set back in 1972.
Several roads are closed in the Pullman-Moscow area along with streets in both cities. Officials are alerting motorists to not drive through high and moving water.
