Idaho gas prices jump nearly 50 cents in a week as crude oil costs surge

BOISE, ID — Idaho drivers are paying sharply higher prices at the pump this week as global oil markets react to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

According to the latest report from AAA Idaho, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the state reached $3.70 on March 16, an increase of about 46 cents compared with one week ago. Prices are also 76 cents higher than a month ago and 62 cents higher than the same time last year.

The national average currently stands at $3.72 per gallon, which is 24 cents higher than a week ago and 79 cents higher than a month ago.

AAA reports that Idaho now ranks 14th in the nation for the highest fuel prices. California currently has the most expensive fuel at an average of $5.53 per gallon, while Kansas has the lowest average price at $3.15 per gallon.

AAA Idaho Public Affairs Director Matthew Conde said global oil market instability tied to conflict in the Middle East is pushing crude oil prices higher, which in turn affects gasoline costs for consumers.

The West Texas Intermediate crude benchmark is trading near $94 per barrel, roughly $31 higher than one month ago, according to AAA.

Conde said that as long as uncertainty remains around global oil supply, crude oil prices — and gasoline prices — are likely to remain under pressure.

Spring Break travel could also contribute to rising prices as demand for gasoline increases in the coming weeks.
