LEWISTON, ID – A 21-year-old man is facing a felony charge after allegedly assaulting a Lewiston police officer Friday evening, according to court documents filed in Nez Perce County.
Matthew F. Meisner, who is reportedly homeless, is accused of striking a Lewiston Police Department officer during an incident reported around 5 p.m. March 13 in the 1800 block of G Street. Prosecutors allege Meisner committed battery against a law enforcement officer.
According to court records, the officer had just completed a traffic stop and was seated in a marked patrol vehicle writing a citation when Meisner approached the driver’s side window and knocked. Investigators say the officer rolled down the window and Meisner allegedly began striking him through the open window.
Court documents state the officer was able to deflect one of the punches before exiting the patrol vehicle. The affidavit alleges a physical struggle followed, during which the officer struck Meisner several times and pulled him to the ground while attempting to restrain him.
Responding officers reported locating the officer behind the patrol vehicle with Meisner pinned on the ground. The report states Meisner was placed in handcuffs and later transported to the Nez Perce County Jail.
Police documentation indicates both men sustained injuries. Investigators reported the officer had cuts to a hand and lip, swelling around the face and abrasions to a knee. The affidavit states the officer also complained of significant pain in a shoulder and difficulty moving an arm and was later evaluated at a Lewiston medical clinic.
According to the report, Meisner had a laceration on the bridge of his nose and swelling and redness on his face. Authorities also noted swelling in his hands while he was at the Nez Perce County Jail.
Investigators reported a nearby business manager observed the altercation through surveillance cameras and later provided video footage to police. Two additional witnesses who were reportedly driving past the area told investigators they saw Meisner approach the patrol vehicle and strike the officer.
According to the affidavit, Meisner allegedly admitted to striking the officer during questioning. The report also states Meisner told officers he had been intoxicated at the time. He is expected to make his initial court appearance on Monday afternoon.
