AAA: Idaho gas prices near $4 mark after sharp overnight spike

BOISE, ID — Idaho drivers are seeing a rapid increase in fuel costs this week, with the state average nearing $4 per gallon after a significant overnight jump, according to AAA Idaho.

The average price for a gallon of regular fuel in Idaho reached $3.98 on Thursday, rising 14 cents in a single day. That puts prices 47 cents higher than a week ago, more than $1 higher than a month ago, and 72 cents above the same time last year.

The national average sits at $3.88 per gallon, also trending upward with increases seen over the past week and month.

AAA Idaho officials point to global factors driving the surge, including ongoing conflict in the Middle East that has disrupted oil supply routes. About 20% of the world’s oil supply is currently affected by reduced flow through the Strait of Hormuz, contributing to higher crude oil prices.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil is trading near $98 per barrel, a sharp increase from both a month and a year ago.

AAA data shows rising fuel costs are likely to influence driver behavior. A majority of Americans report they begin adjusting travel habits when gas prices reach $4 per gallon, with even more changes expected if prices approach $5.

The Idaho statewide average is expected to exceed $4 per gallon within the next day if current trends continue.
