Idaho Fish and Game investigating fish loss at Lewiston pond

LEWISTON, ID — Idaho Fish and Game is investigating a fish loss at Kiwanis Park Pond after approximately 150 of the 900 recently stocked fish were found dead just two days after being released.

Officials said the cause of the fish mortality remains unknown. Initial checks did not identify any obvious environmental issues, with dissolved oxygen levels within normal ranges and water temperatures holding steady at about 55 degrees. Hatchery staff also reported no problems during transport or stocking.

Despite the loss, fishing conditions at the pond remain favorable. Anglers have reported strong catch rates, indicating most of the stocked fish are healthy and actively feeding.

Clearwater Region fisheries staff are continuing to monitor the pond and are working with managers to determine the cause of the die-off.

Another stocking is planned for April. If conditions are found to be unsuitable at that time, Idaho Fish and Game said fish will be redirected to Soldiers Meadow Reservoir to maintain fishing opportunities in the region.

The agency said it will continue evaluating the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
