U.S. Army Corps of Engineers bans alcohol at Illia Dunes recreation area

CLARKSTON, WA — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Walla Walla District has announced a ban on alcohol at the Illia Dunes Recreation Area on Lake Bryan, citing safety concerns and repeated alcohol-related incidents.

Illia Dunes is located along the Snake River in Garfield County, about three miles west of Lower Granite Dam on the south bank of Lake Bryan.

According to the agency, the restriction is intended to reduce safety hazards, complaints, and disruptive behavior at the popular recreation site.

Officials said the move follows a similar alcohol ban implemented at Granite Point on Lower Granite Lake in 2022, which was put in place after an increase in incidents, litter, and dangerous cliff jumping.

“Public safety is our top priority,” said Megan Innes, natural resources manager for Lower Granite Lock and Dam, in the release. The agency noted that similar bans have improved conditions at other locations and allowed rangers and law enforcement to better focus resources.

The ban is expected to help reduce the number of alcohol-related complaints and improve overall conditions for visitors at both sites.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said the goal is to maintain a safe and family-friendly environment at its recreation areas.
