Dworshak Dam increases releases to manage spring runoff and flood risk

AHSAHKA, ID— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Walla Walla District announced Wednesday that Dworshak Dam is increasing water releases to manage flood risk as spring runoff approaches.

Officials said releases from the dam are being raised from about 12,900 cubic feet per second to roughly 14,900 cubic feet per second. The adjustment comes as the reservoir continues to see higher-than-average inflows this winter and spring, leaving water levels significantly above the long-term average for this time of year.

The reservoir currently sits about 24 feet below full pool but remains elevated compared to typical conditions, prompting the need to create additional storage space ahead of peak runoff.

Releases are expected to remain between 13,000 and 15,000 cubic feet per second through the end of March and into early April, with officials continuing to monitor conditions and make adjustments as needed. At this time, the Corps does not expect any issues with refilling the reservoir later this summer.

Officials are also urging the public to use caution along the Clearwater River, noting that flows are currently deep, cold and fast. Fluctuating water levels can create hazardous conditions near riverbanks.

Additional updates on water management conditions are available through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Walla Walla District.
