Washington law establishes Civil Air Patrol as division within state military department

CAMP MURRAY, WA— A new law signed by Bob Ferguson establishes the Washington Wing of the Civil Air Patrol as a division within the Washington Military Department, formalizing its role in state emergency response efforts.

Senate Bill 6046, approved earlier this month, places the volunteer aviation organization within the state’s military department structure, with officials saying the change will improve coordination and access to resources during emergencies.

The Washington Wing includes 26 squadrons and nearly 2,000 members statewide. Its resources include 13 aircraft and five small unmanned aircraft systems, along with trained personnel such as pilots, mission observers and drone operators.

Under the law, the governor may activate Civil Air Patrol members under state active duty to support local, tribal and state agencies when needed.

Officials said the change is expected to improve coordination before, during and after disasters, particularly for search and rescue operations and aerial damage assessments.

The legislation, introduced by Sen. Keith Wagoner, received unanimous support in the Senate and bipartisan backing in the House.

The law also expands access to National Guard facilities and administrative support for Civil Air Patrol operations, while maintaining the organization’s federal role as the U.S. Air Force auxiliary.

In addition to emergency response, the Civil Air Patrol will continue its cadet program focused on leadership training, aerospace education and character development.
