WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal food safety officials have issued a public health alert for certain frozen, dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets sold at Walmart stores nationwide after tests found possible contamination with lead.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the alert April 1, stating the ready-to-eat products may contain unsafe levels of lead.
The affected product is a 29-ounce bag of “Great Value Fully Cooked Dino Shaped Chicken Breast Nuggets,” produced on Feb. 10, 2026, with a best-by date of Feb. 10, 2027. The items were distributed to Walmart locations across the country.
Officials said a recall was not requested because the product is no longer available for purchase. However, there is concern that some packages may still be stored in consumers’ freezers.
The issue was identified during routine sampling conducted by a state partner, according to FSIS. The agency is continuing to investigate and has not ruled out the possibility of additional products being affected.
Health officials warn that lead exposure is especially dangerous for children and pregnant women, as it can harm developing brains and nervous systems. There is no safe level of lead consumption, and the amount detected in the nuggets could be significantly higher than recommended limits for children.
Consumers who have purchased the product are advised not to eat it. Instead, it should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
Anyone with questions can contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854 or submit a report through the agency’s online complaint system.
