KAMIAH, ID — Work is underway to repair damage along North Fork Road (NFSR 250/247) following significant impacts from a windstorm last year, according to the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests.
Forest officials said the storm caused extensive blowdown, leaving trees across roadways and recreation areas and creating safety concerns for travelers. Crews have begun salvage operations, clearing debris and stacking logs along the corridor. Those logs are not available for firewood permits.
Travelers should expect delays and intermittent disruptions as heavy equipment operates in the area. Forest officials are asking the public to plan ahead and be patient while work continues.
“We are actively working to restore and improve access to this valued portion of our forests,” acting North Fork District Ranger Katie Rhode said in the release, noting that travel times may be impacted during operations.
Officials also warned that conditions at higher elevations remain unpredictable despite warmer spring weather in nearby communities. Snow, mud, and downed trees continue to affect access in parts of the forest, which can pose risks for visitors unfamiliar with backcountry travel.
Visitors are encouraged to check current road and trail conditions with local ranger stations before heading out. Updates on the project will be shared as work progresses and access improves.
