LEWISTON, ID — The Nez Perce County Prosecutor’s Office is partnering with local businesses this April to promote prevention and awareness as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
According to a press release issued Thursday, the office is distributing reusable drink covers at several Lewiston businesses in an effort to help prevent the use of drug-facilitated sexual assault.
Participating locations include Hops and Vine, Jollymore’s, Corner Villa, Brock’s and Bravas, and Groundwork Brewing, where the covers are available to the public.
Justin J. Coleman said the effort is aimed at both raising awareness and providing a simple tool people can use to protect themselves.
“The use of roofies is something that unfortunately happens in our community and it’s simply unacceptable,” Coleman said. “I want to encourage people to get these cup covers and use them but also to be careful not to leave their drinks unattended.”
Rohypnol, often referred to as “roofies,” is one of several substances that can be used to facilitate sexual assault. Symptoms may begin within 15 to 20 minutes and can last for hours. Reported effects include confusion, dizziness, impaired coordination, nausea and memory loss.
Officials said local law enforcement agencies and the prosecutor’s office continue to investigate and prosecute cases involving sexual violence, while also working to educate the community on prevention.
Anyone seeking more information about Sexual Assault Awareness Month or resources for victims can visit the YWCA Idaho website. Those needing immediate assistance are encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
