OLYMPIA, WA – Governor Bob Ferguson announced he is directing $500,000 from the state’s Economic Development Strategic Reserve Fund to support the expansion of IonQ in Bothell.
IonQ’s largest shareholders include The Vanguard Group, BlackRock and Morgan Stanley Investment Management, which manage global assets in the trillions.
The funding was awarded to the Economic Alliance of Snohomish County for building upgrades, workforce expenses and other costs associated with expanding IonQ’s quantum computing manufacturing facility. The state funding is matched by more than $14 million in private investment.
IonQ opened the nation’s first dedicated quantum computing manufacturing facility in Bothell in 2024. The site has since expanded into a 100,000-square-foot hub for production, research and development, and a second quantum data center.
According to Ferguson’s Office, the company’s expansion is expected to create between 1,200 and 2,000 jobs over the next five years.
Ferguson said the investment supports Washington’s role in advancing new technology and strengthening the state’s economy.
IonQ develops quantum computing systems designed to handle complex problems that traditional computers cannot efficiently solve, with applications in fields including health care, energy and cybersecurity.
The Strategic Reserve Fund is supported by unclaimed lottery prize money and is used to attract and retain jobs and economic investment in Washington through projects that include private-sector funding.
