LEWISTON, ID — Firefighters quickly contained a structure fire Wednesday afternoon at the Turnberry Apartments in Lewiston, preventing more extensive damage and safely rescuing residents from the building.

According to the Lewiston Fire Department, crews were dispatched to 2935 Magnolia Street at approximately 4:14 p.m. after receiving reports of a structure fire. Firefighters arrived to find flames on a second-story balcony that had begun spreading into the apartment through the soffit area and a broken window.

Fire crews were able to rapidly knock down the fire and conduct a search of the affected apartment. One resident was assisted to the ground floor by Lewiston Police Department officers. In a neighboring second-story apartment, a resident using a wheelchair and a Lewiston police officer sheltered in place until they could be safely rescued by firefighters.

Two Lewiston police officers were evaluated for possible smoke inhalation at the scene but did not require additional medical treatment.

The response included three fire engines, three medic units, three command vehicles, three inspector vehicles, and 22 Lewiston Fire Department personnel. Automatic aid was provided by Clarkston Fire Department, Asotin County Fire District No. 1, and Wheatland Fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist residents displaced by the incident.
