Whitman County undersheriff announces retirement after 33 years of service

COLFAX, WA — The Whitman County Sheriff’s Office has announced the upcoming retirement of Undersheriff Chris Chapman, marking the end of a 33-year law enforcement career spent serving communities across Whitman County.

According to a media release, Chapman first joined the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office in 1993 as a reserve deputy before transitioning to a full-time position in March 1995. Over the course of his career, he served in numerous roles, including supervisor, investigator, SWAT team leader, and boating safety officer. He advanced through the ranks from deputy to sergeant and was appointed undersheriff in 2020 .

Sheriff Brett Myers credited Chapman with helping guide the office through complex challenges while maintaining high professional standards.

“Chris Chapman’s career is a testament to selflessness, duty and unwavering integrity,” Myers said in the release. “His commitment to serving others has strengthened our team and set the bar high for others to follow” .

Chapman is scheduled to retire at the end of February 2026.

The sheriff’s office also announced that Keith Cooper, currently a sergeant, will assume the role of undersheriff. Cooper began his career with the office in 2000 as a reserve deputy and was the first full-time deputy hired by Myers after he became sheriff in 2003. Cooper brings 25 years of experience to the position, with a background that includes investigations, K-9 operations, and SWAT service .

Sheriff Myers said Cooper’s experience is expected to ensure continuity and stability within the department as the leadership transition takes place .
