MOSCOW, ID — The University of Idaho has hired Robert McQuade Jr. as special assistant to the president for governmental relations, with the appointment taking effect as the 2026 legislative session begins.
McQuade is a University of Idaho alumnus, earning a bachelor’s degree in history in 2008. Most recently, he served as chief deputy in the Idaho Secretary of State’s Office, where his work included drafting legislation and administrative rules, advising state and local governments, and providing daily counsel to the secretary of state and executive leadership.
According to university officials, McQuade’s background in state government and existing relationships with lawmakers are expected to support the university’s legislative efforts. U of I President Scott Green said McQuade’s experience will be a resource for state legislators as they consider investments in university programs and students.
McQuade holds a law degree from the University of Baltimore and has previously served as general counsel for the Association of Idaho Cities, as well as legal counsel for the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses and the Boise.
He succeeds Caroline Nilsson-Troy, who retired at the end of 2025.
