SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A 48-year-old man was arrested Saturday afternoon after deputies responded to a reported burglary in progress at a business in the City of Millwood, according to the Spokane Valley Police Department.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called at about 2:25 p.m. on Jan. 18 to a store in the 9200 block of East Trent Avenue after the business owner reported watching live security footage of a man attempting to break into the building through a window.

A responding sergeant located the suspect, later identified as Lawrence D. Jones, in an alley behind the business and observed damage to the window, including a large hole and broken glass on the ground. When the deputy attempted to contact him, Jones fled on foot.

After a short pursuit, Jones was taken into custody in a parking lot near the 2700 block of North Argonne Road. Deputies reported Jones had a cut on his hand and a small amount of blood on him.

Jones told deputies he had been dropped off in the area by bus to pick up medications and claimed he noticed another individual breaking the window. He admitted picking up broken glass but denied attempting to enter the business. Deputies said he was unable to provide a description of the other person he claimed was involved.

The business owner later arrived at the scene and estimated the cost to repair the damaged window at about $300.

During a search incident to arrest, deputies reported finding a ski mask and vehicle keys in Jones’ pockets. He was transported to the Spokane County Jail and booked on charges of second-degree burglary, third-degree malicious mischief, and obstructing a law enforcement officer.

Investigators said a criminal history check showed Jones has more than 50 prior arrests, with convictions including criminal trespass, theft, fraud, burglary of a vehicle, unauthorized use of a vehicle, evading arrest, and resisting arrest.
