MOSES LAKE, WA — The Grant County Sheriff’s Office says its Crime Reduction Team arrested a 36-year-old man Sunday accused of scamming an 87-year-old Grant County man out of more than $100,000.
According to the sheriff’s office, investigators learned the victim had been sending money since October after being promised luxury vehicles, real estate and other items. Funds were allegedly sent through cash exchanges, money transfers and gift cards.
With the victim’s cooperation, deputies set up surveillance near State Route 26 and Beverly Burke Road SW, where the suspect instructed the victim to deliver $64,000 in cash. Deputies said they watched a rear passenger of a black SUV receive the money before the vehicle was stopped.
Authorities determined the SUV was a ride-share and that the driver was unaware of any criminal activity. The rear passenger was identified as Damion O. McDonald, who investigators said arrived in the U.S. from Jamaica earlier this month and flew into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Sunday.
McDonald was booked into the Grant County Jail on suspicion of first-degree theft from a vulnerable adult and first-degree possession of stolen property. The case number is 25GS00624.
The allegations remain under investigation.
