Manhunt Underway for Suspect who Shot 2 Police Officers in Portland

PORTLAND, OR – One of two Portland police officers shot Monday night in the Sullivan’s Gulch neighborhood has been released from the hospital, while the second officer remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Police said the officer who was released is a seven-year veteran of the bureau assigned to North Precinct. The second officer, a 17-year veteran also assigned to North Precinct, continues to receive medical care.

The shooting occurred at about 8:21 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, when officers responded to a report of a threat with a weapon in the area of Northeast 21st Avenue and Northeast Clackamas Street. Police said officers located a suspect on Northeast Clackamas Street between Northeast 16th and 17th avenues. The suspect fired shots at officers, striking two of them, before fleeing the area.

Both officers were transported to the hospital by ambulance and treated for their injuries. Their conditions were reported as stable.

A large search was launched following the shooting, involving the Special Emergency Reaction Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Air Support Unit, Unmanned Aircraft Systems Unit, K9 units and additional officers. Police established a perimeter and closed roads between Northeast Broadway and Northeast Multnomah Street, and between Northeast 15th and Northeast 21st avenues. The initial search concluded without locating the suspect, and the investigation remains active.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male in his mid-30s with facial hair. Police said he was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, black jacket over a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black shoes. He was also carrying a black backpack and a green shopping bag. Investigators believe he is armed with both a knife and a handgun and consider him armed and dangerous.

On Tuesday afternoon, PPB Deputy Chief Chris Gjovik and Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez provided an update on the case. Detectives are now asking the public to assist by providing video that may help identify the suspect.

Police said private security cameras and doorbell cameras may have captured critical footage. Investigators are seeking raw video from the area between Northeast 15th and Northeast 19th avenues and from Northeast Broadway to Northeast Multnomah Street, recorded between 7 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Community members are asked to upload unedited footage directly to the police using a link and QR code provided by PPB. Police emphasized that residents do not need to review the video themselves or look for anything specific, and that footage should not be edited, enhanced or combined. Detectives will review the material for potential evidence.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact detectives at homicidetips@police.portlandoregon.gov or call 503-823-0479 and reference case number 26-18537. Mayor Keith Wilson and Police Chief Bob Day responded to the scene Monday night.
