Two Suspects From Rural Latah County Animal Cruelty Case Plead Not Guilty

PRINCETON, ID – Two of the suspects from the Princeton animal cruelty case involving 12 dogs, including three that died, have pleaded not guilty.

37-year-old James Schraufnagel and 45-year-old Jeannine Schraufnagel are each charged with 12 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.  The couple pleaded not guilty to all counts during their arraignment Wednesday morning in Moscow.  They are scheduled to be back in court for a hearing next month.  James Schraufnagel’s mother, 58-year-old Beth Davis, has been charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty.  Davis is scheduled to enter a plea on Monday.

The Latah County Sheriff’s Office discovered two dead dogs and ten starving dogs at a home on Mckinneyville Road early this month.  One of the dogs rescued from the property died several days later at a veterinary hospital in Moscow.  The Moscow-Pullman Daily News reports that James lives in a trailer on Davis’ property.  He reportedly told deputies that a no contact order against him by his mother kept him from feeding the dogs.  The daily news reports that Jeannine reportedly told deputies that they ran out of money to feed the dogs.
