LEWISTON, ID — A Fruitland angler has set a new Idaho state record after landing a rainbow trout weighing just over 20 pounds from Dworshak Reservoir, according to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Todd Phillips caught the fish on Jan. 13 while fishing the reservoir during a break in winter weather. Phillips was targeting rainbow trout when he hooked the fish, which required several minutes to land, officials said.

The trout was later certified at 20.03 pounds and measured 33.5 inches from snout to tail. The catch surpassed the previous certified weight state record by 0.03 pounds.

Idaho Fish and Game said the record was verified by Tim D’Amico, a regional fisheries biologist, following required certification procedures. Photos released by the department show Phillips holding the trout at the reservoir.

Dworshak Reservoir, located northeast of Orofino, is known for producing large rainbow trout due to its cold, deep water and abundant food supply. Fish and Game officials maintain official state record listings for certified catches across Idaho, including weight-based records.

The record-setting trout has been added to Idaho’s state record books.
