BOISE, ID — Idaho drivers saw a small uptick at the pump this week, though fuel prices in the state continue to remain below the national average, according to AAA Idaho.
AAA reports the statewide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline increased by two cents to $2.78. Despite the increase, prices are still nine cents lower than a month ago and 27 cents cheaper than this time last year.
The national average currently sits at $2.88 per gallon, nearly six cents higher than a week ago and four cents higher than a month ago, but still 24 cents less than a year ago. Idaho now ranks 26th in the nation for the most expensive fuel.
AAA Idaho Public and Government Affairs Director Matthew Conde said winter demand and relatively low crude oil prices have helped keep fuel costs in check, though recent national increases could begin to influence local prices.
West Texas Intermediate crude oil is trading near $61 per barrel, about $3 more than a month ago but still $11 cheaper than a year ago. AAA noted that most of Idaho’s finished gasoline supply comes from Utah refineries, where average prices are about 15 cents per gallon lower than Idaho’s.
AAA also reminded drivers to keep at least a half tank of fuel during winter months and noted that cold temperatures can cause diesel fuel to gel, potentially clogging fuel lines.
