OLYMPIA, WA – House Republicans are warning that the Democratic majority is promoting bills that would raise everyday costs while simultaneously claiming affordability is a top priority.
During a media availability Tuesday, House Republicans said the Democratic majority is moving bills that would raise costs for everyday necessities, even as lawmakers say affordability is a top priority this session.
House Republican Deputy Leader Chris Corry said the new fees would hit working families where it hurts most.
“They’re moving House Bill 2275, which is going to increase a new utility surcharge on folks, so Washingtonians’ bills are going to get more expensive when they go to pay their heat and gas,” said Corrry.
Republicans also raised alarms about public safety amid growing homeless encampments. House Republican Floor Leader April Connors says local governments fear a Democrat-sponsored bill would limit the ability to clear encampments from public spaces.
“The cities are very, very worried about how this will be implemented, how many beds are available, and how they’re going to keep their parks and their communities safe,” said Connors.
Republicans say they’ll continue pushing back against new taxes and legislation that would worsen affordability and public safety.
