Mountain lion sighted on Lewis-Clark College campus in Lewiston

LEWISTON, ID— Idaho Fish and Game officials say a mountain lion was spotted on the Lewis-Clark College campus late Sunday evening, prompting a search by wildlife officers and local law enforcement.

According to a Fish and Game press release, surveillance footage later showed what appeared to be a young mountain lion near the ticket booth by the college’s baseball field on Sunday, Feb. 1. Fish and Game personnel, campus security staff, and Lewiston Police Department officers searched the area but were unable to locate the animal. As of Monday afternoon, no additional reports of mountain lion sightings within Lewiston city limits had been received.

Fish and Game officials said mountain lions are typically nocturnal and elusive, but occasional sightings can occur near populated areas. Jana Ashling, regional wildlife manager for Idaho Fish and Game, noted that while urban sightings are uncommon, they are not unheard of.

The agency emphasized public safety as its top priority and urged residents to remain aware of their surroundings, particularly when outdoors at night. Officials recommend not running if a mountain lion is encountered, maintaining eye contact, making oneself appear larger, and slowly backing away. Carrying safety equipment such as bear spray, a noise device, or a flashlight can also help reduce risk.

Pet owners are advised to keep pets on leashes, avoid leaving pet food outdoors, and supervise animals when outside, especially after dark. Fish and Game also recommends securing garbage, discouraging wildlife such as deer and elk from gathering near homes, and using motion-sensor lighting to deter predators.

Anyone who sees a mountain lion or has an encounter is encouraged to report it to the Idaho Fish and Game Clearwater Regional Office at 208-799-5010. Officials say timely reports help monitor lion activity and assess potential public safety concerns.
