Lewiston Mayor Announces Events for America 250 Commemoration

LEWISTON, ID – The City of Lewiston is joining communities across the country in participating in America 250, a nationwide commemoration marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Mayor Dan Johnson announced.

The commemoration is intended to encourage reflection on American values such as freedom, civic participation, equality, and shared responsibility, which Johnson said are deeply rooted in Lewiston’s history and community identity. He noted the city’s long-standing emphasis on resilience, cooperation, and pride, shaped by its history at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers and reflected in its neighborhoods today.

Over the coming months, the city plans to partner with local organizations to host a series of free, public events designed to help residents connect with shared history, reflect on democracy, and celebrate the community. Planned activities include a community bike ride titled “Paul Revere’s Ride,” hosted by the Lewiston Parks and Recreation Department at Hells Gate State Park on April 18, as well as America 250-themed summer reading activities being developed by the Lewiston Library. City officials said additional events will be announced throughout the year.

Many of the planned programs are supported through grant funding, which the city said allows it to provide community experiences at low cost while maintaining a responsible approach to city operations.

Johnson encouraged residents to participate in the events and discussions associated with America 250 and to learn more about the nationwide commemoration. He also invited community members to consider becoming an America 250 in Idaho Ambassador.

Johnson said the milestone offers an opportunity not only to reflect on the nation’s history, but also to recommit to the values that guide both the country and the Lewiston community moving forward.
