PULLMAN, WA – The Washington State University Alumni Association (WSUAA) has selected former U.S. Ambassador and business leader Roger F. Nyhus (’90) as a recipient of the 2026 Alumni Achievement Award, the highest honor conferred by the association.
Nyhus, a 1990 graduate of what is now the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, exemplifies that legacy through a career grounded in the principles commonly known as the Murrow Standard of clarity, integrity, courage, and accountability in communication. Introduced to these values as a student through rigorous training in reporting, writing, and ethical decision-making, Nyhus has carried them forward as a practitioner in high-stakes environments across business, government, and diplomacy.
“The Murrow College has an important role to play in navigating a positive and productive path forward for our country — by instilling in students and the community the values of Edward R. Murrow: truth over comfort, courage in the face of power, bearing witness, elevating democracy through journalism, and maintaining independence and journalistic integrity. I am proud to carry the Murrow legacy forward and hopefully inspire others,” Nyhus said.
Most recently, Nyhus served as U.S. Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, representing the United States across seven nations and working at the intersection of diplomacy, global security, climate resilience, and international cooperation. As a member of the Chinook Indian Nation, Nyhus is one of only five Native American U.S. ambassadors in history.
Nyhus is now founder and CEO of AMBO Strategy, a global consulting firm that advises senior executives and organizations navigating complex challenges where trust, credibility, and clear communication are essential.

Prior to his diplomatic service, Nyhus founded and led Nyhus Communications for nearly three decades, building it into one of the largest Native American–owned communications firms in Washington state. Through work with global corporations, nonprofit organizations, and public leaders, his firm demonstrated how strategic communication — rooted in truth, precision, and public responsibility — can drive meaningful change.
Murrow College Dean Bruce Pinkleton emphasized the connection between Nyhus’ student experience and his professional impact.
“Roger Nyhus exemplifies the Murrow Standard not as an abstract ideal, but as a daily practice. From his foundation as a Murrow College student to his leadership in global business and diplomacy, he has consistently demonstrated how clear, ethical, and courageous communication can shape outcomes, build trust, and serve the public good,” Pinkleton said.
Created in 1970 by the WSUAA Board of Directors, the Alumni Achievement Award recognizes alumni who have rendered significant service to Washington State University and/or made outstanding contributions to their community, profession, or country. Since WSU’s founding in 1890, fewer than 600 alumni — out of an estimated 250,000 who have attended the university — have received this honor. Past recipients represent leaders in journalism, public service, business, science, education, and the arts, forming a legacy of Cougars whose work has shaped industries and institutions worldwide.
WSUAA Executive Director Mariah Maki noted that Nyhus’ career reflects the purpose of the award itself. “From his distinguished leadership in public affairs to his steadfast commitment to elevating communities, Roger Nyhus exemplifies the very spirit the Alumni Achievement Award was created to honor. Since its inception, this award has recognized Washington State University alumni whose professional excellence and service reflect the highest ideals of our institution. Nyhus’ career stands as a testament to those ideals — marked by integrity, impact, and an unwavering dedication to making a difference. His achievements not only reflect the proud history of this prestigious award but also inspire future generations of Cougs to lead with purpose.”
Nyhus will be formally presented with the Alumni Achievement Award during the 50th Murrow Symposium on April 6. This year’s symposium theme, The Murrow Standard, highlights ethical leadership and excellence in communication — principles that continue to define Murrow College graduates and their impact on society.
