Suspect Crashes Stolen Vehicle While Fleeing Police in North Lewiston

LEWISTON, ID – A stolen vehicle crashed in Lewiston on Tuesday after being detected by the Lewiston Police Department’s automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) system, according to police.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., a Lewiston police officer was performing administrative duties related to an abandoned vehicle when the ALPR system alerted him to a stolen license plate. The officer saw a black Toyota 2-door sedan pass his patrol vehicle and confirmed the plate matched the stolen vehicle, reported as stolen out of Spokane.

The officer attempted a traffic stop in the 2300 block of 3rd Avenue North. The vehicle fled and traveled westbound in the eastbound lane toward the intersection of 3rd Avenue North and U.S. Highway 12. The officer did not pursue due to the vehicle’s erratic driving. The stolen car ran a red light and crashed into two southbound vehicles at the intersection.  The southbound roadway was blocked and traffic was diverted while the scene was cleared.

After the crash, 41-year-old Thomas Curd, of Spokane, climbed out of the sunroof and ran from the scene. He fell while running across 22nd Street North and was taken into custody by the officer.

Thirty-year-old Nicole Kalousek, also from Spokane, exited the passenger seat and resisted officers as they attempted to take her into custody.

Idaho State Police conducted the crash investigation. No injuries were reported.

Curd was booked into the Nez Perce County Jail on an active warrant and multiple felony and misdemeanor charges. Kalousek was booked on an active warrant and misdemeanor charges.
