Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane Announces Reelection Bid

BOISE, ID — Phil McGrane announced Tuesday that he is seeking reelection, citing his record on elections oversight, public lands management, and business regulation.

McGrane, first elected as Idaho’s Secretary of State in 2022, said in a campaign announcement that his office has focused on election security, transparency, and modernization of state systems.

According to the release, McGrane oversaw what was described as the largest election in state history in 2024 and testified before Congress regarding Idaho’s election practices. His office also partnered with county clerks statewide to adopt the “12 Principles of Idaho Elections” and launched a redesigned VoteIdaho.gov website with expanded public data tools.

The release states that Idaho implemented the Only Citizens Can Vote Act in partnership with Brad Little during McGrane’s tenure. It also notes updates to campaign finance and lobbyist reporting systems intended to improve public access and accountability.

As a member of the Idaho Land Board, McGrane helps oversee endowment lands that fund public schools and institutions. The campaign said he has worked with industry representatives in timber, mining, agriculture, and recreation, and completed training as a wildland firefighter during his first year in office.

The announcement also references McGrane’s opposition to the federal Corporate Transparency Act. According to the release, he led an effort to file an amicus brief with other secretaries of state challenging the law’s reporting requirements for businesses.

McGrane is a fourth-generation Idahoan and father of three. His reelection campaign begins ahead of the 2026 election cycle.
