MOSCOW, ID – The Moscow Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 603 W. Palouse River Drive #67 at approximately 5:03 p.m. on Feb. 26, 2026. The first engine arrived on scene in under four minutes.
Initial reports indicated a single-wide mobile home with smoke and fire visible and the possibility that a dog remained inside. Upon arrival, crews observed smoke and fire coming from the front portion of the home. Firefighters were met by the occupants, who reported that multiple animals were still inside the residence.
Crews deployed an attack line to the front door to enter the home, begin fire suppression and conduct a search for animals and any potential occupants. Several dogs exited the home on their own after firefighters made entry, while others were initially unaccounted for.
The main body of the fire was quickly knocked down. Firefighters conducted both primary and secondary searches and located multiple dogs and cats with varying degrees of injuries. In total, 17 animals were found. Seven dogs were transported by fire department personnel for emergency veterinary care. Five dogs were taken to Viking Veterinary Hospital, and two dogs were transported to the Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Several other animals were found deceased.
No occupants were injured in the fire, and no injuries were reported among fire or emergency response personnel. The single-wide mobile home is considered a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The fire department was assisted at the scene by the Moscow Police Department and Whitcom 911. The occupants received assistance from the American Red Cross.
The fire department also thanked Viking Veterinary Hospital and the Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for providing care to the injured animals.
