BOISE, ID – Gas prices across Idaho climbed sharply over the past week as global crude oil prices surged, according to new data released Monday by AAA Idaho.
The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Idaho reached $3.24, an increase of 27 cents from a week ago, 34 cents higher than a month ago, and six cents more than this time last year, AAA reported.
Nationally, the average price for regular gasoline is $3.48 per gallon, reflecting a 48-cent increase in the past week and 58 cents more than a month ago.
AAA Idaho Public Affairs Director Matthew Conde said the spike is tied to rising crude oil prices amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
“Prices across the country are off to the races,” Conde said, noting that Idaho’s increases have not been as steep as some other states. “However, these days, that’s like celebrating the last banana to go rotten. It’s just a matter of time.”
Even with the recent jump, Idaho currently ranks 31st in the nation for average gas prices, meaning fuel remains less expensive in the state than in many parts of the country.
Crude oil prices have also seen significant movement. The West Texas Intermediate benchmark briefly traded at about $117 per barrel over the weekend and was near $95 per barrel Monday, roughly $24 higher than a week ago and the first time prices have climbed above $100 since the summer of 2022.
Among western states, California currently has the highest average gas price at $5.20 per gallon, followed by Washington at $4.63, Hawaii at $4.52, and both Nevada and Oregon at $4.21.
AAA encourages drivers to combine errands into fewer trips, avoid heavy stop-and-go traffic when possible, and use fuel rewards programs to help offset higher fuel costs.
