CENTRAL FERRY, WA – Firefighters from multiple agencies responded Monday afternoon to a wildland fire near Central Ferry that was only accessible by boat.
Asotin County Fire District #1 assisted Garfield County Fire District #1 after receiving a mutual aid request just before 3 p.m. to help contain the fire about one mile downriver from Central Ferry, Washington along Washington State Route 127.
According to officials, the fire started when a maintenance worker with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was mowing in the area. Winds along the Snake River helped fan the flames, allowing the fire to spread quickly through dry vegetation.
Firefighters from both fire districts and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers worked together to bring the fire under control. The fire was contained at about 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Asotin County Fire District #1 Chief Noel Hardin said the incident highlights how dry conditions are at lower elevations and noted that early spring fires can occur when weather and fuel conditions align.
Officials said the fire burned an estimated 10 acres. No injuries were reported.
