Washington State Patrol plans spring break emphasis patrols near WSU

PULLMAN, WA — The Washington State Patrol will increase enforcement patrols in several Eastern Washington counties during Washington State University’s upcoming spring break travel period.

Troopers will conduct emphasis patrols beginning Thursday, March 12, through Sunday, March 22, focusing on speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and other violations that commonly contribute to collisions.

The patrols are being organized in response to increased travel to and from the WSU Pullman campus during spring break. District 4 troopers in Whitman and Adams counties and District 6 troopers in Grant and Kittitas counties will take part in the effort.

According to the Washington State Patrol, speeding remains one of the leading causes of collisions statewide. District 4 troopers investigated 33 fatal collisions in 2025 and have already investigated two fatal crashes so far in 2026.

Troopers say they will closely monitor posted speed limits and will have zero tolerance for impaired driving. Drivers are also urged to avoid distractions and remain focused on operating their vehicles safely.

Motorists traveling to and from Pullman can expect an increased law enforcement presence along State Routes 26 and 195, as well as Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass.

The Washington State Patrol said it will work alongside Washington State University and other local and state officials to promote safe travel during the spring break period.

“Our primary mission is to ensure that everyone arrives back at school safely and without incident,” the agency said in a statement.
