BOISE, ID — Gas prices across Idaho continue to climb, with the statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline reaching $3.51, according to the latest update from AAA. The price is three cents higher than yesterday, 32 cents more than a week ago, and 55 cents higher than a month ago.
The national average is currently $3.60 per gallon, which is two cents higher than yesterday, 34 cents more than a week ago, and 66 cents higher than a month ago, AAA reported.
AAA Idaho Public Affairs Director Matthew Conde said the volatility in oil markets is a major factor behind the rapid increases at the pump.
“The fact that we’re even sharing a day-by-day comparison really underscores how turbulent the market is these days,” Conde said.
Crude oil prices have fluctuated sharply in recent days. Prices briefly reached $110 per barrel over the weekend before dropping to around $85, and have since risen again to approximately $94 per barrel. By comparison, West Texas Intermediate crude traded near $67 per barrel at the end of February, according to AAA.
AAA says geopolitical tensions are also affecting energy markets. Iran has stated that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the current conflict ends, raising concerns about global oil supply if shipping cannot resume or if regional infrastructure is damaged.
Despite rising fuel costs, AAA expects many Americans to move forward with travel plans already scheduled for spring break.
Drivers looking to save money at the pump can take steps to improve fuel efficiency. AAA recommends reducing freeway speeds by five to ten miles per hour, which can improve fuel economy by as much as 14 percent, keeping tires properly inflated, and avoiding excessive idling or heavy congestion where possible.
Analysts say fuel prices could remain elevated in the near term if global supply disruptions continue.
