Driver Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash on State Highway 3 Near St. Maries

ST. MARIES, ID — A St. Maries man died Thursday morning following a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 3 north of the city, according to the Idaho State Police.

The crash occurred around 9:25 a.m. on March 12 near milepost 86 in Benewah County. Investigators say a 65-year-old man from St. Maries was driving a 2025 Toyota Tacoma northbound when the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and crossed left of center, striking a southbound 1990 Peterbilt semi-truck driven by a 48-year-old man from Saint Regis, Montana.

The Tacoma driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said next of kin have been notified.

State Highway 3 was blocked for approximately two and a half hours while emergency crews responded and cleared the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police. Assisting agencies included the Benewah County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Maries Fire Department, and the Idaho Transportation Department.
