PULLMAN, WA – The Whitman County Humane Society is asking the county commissioners for financial support to help sustain their animal shelter.

Amy Griffiths from the humane society based in Pullman presented the organization’s funding request to the Whitman County Commissioners on Monday. Griffiths says the group has been cutting costs and improving efficiencies over the past few years but is still short of a balanced budget.

The no kill shelter in Pullman takes in animals from the entire county. The humane society has contracts with several local municipalities, including a longstanding deal with the City of Pullman, but doesn’t have an agreement with Whitman County.

Griffiths told the commissioners Monday that most of the dogs and cats they take in come from unincorporated Whitman County. The humane society last year spent over 57,000 dollars caring for nearly 150 animals that were brought in by the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office.

The organization is asking the county commissioners to allocate 22,000 dollars to the Whitman County Humane Society for fiscal year 2027. Griffiths says despite their best efforts the group is still falling short financially.

The Whitman County Commissioners agreed to discuss the funding request further at a later meeting. Griffiths told the board she will be making similar funding requests to the smaller towns in Whitman County.
