Latah County officials say aging jail not viable long-term

MOSCOW, ID — The Latah County Sheriff’s Office says repairing the county jail is not a long-term solution, citing ongoing life-safety concerns tied to aging infrastructure.

During a recent community presentation, officials pointed to issues with electrical systems, fire suppression, and emergency exits that do not meet current standards. They said continuing to house inmates overnight would mean operating a facility that falls short of modern safety expectations.

Upgrades are estimated to cost more than $10 million, including electrical rerouting, fire system replacement, exit improvements, and plumbing work. Even then, the building would likely remain usable for only another five to 10 years.

Officials said past repairs kept the jail operational but did not resolve underlying problems. They added that continued investment would lead to repeated costs without addressing long-term needs.

Community feedback is being collected as the county considers future options.
